Tea Party Group Rejects Claim that Toomey Sold Out 2nd Amendment;
Takes Neutral Position on Toomey/Manchin Gun Bill
Philadelphia, PA (April 11, 2013) -- The Independence Hall Tea Party Association, the oldest and largest Tea Party group in the tri-state region, is defending Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) for his leadership role in a federal bill designed to provide background checks on Americans who purchase guns.
"While we understand the legitimate concerns of many of our friends in the center/right coalition, we also think that Senator Toomey, by taking a leadership role in developing this bill, has done a superb job in defending the 2nd Amendment from those liberal Democrats who support outright bans on certain weapons and on magazines," said Association President Teri Adams.
"In February, we took a survey of our members and found, that by a two to one margin, they supported universal background checks.
"Senator Toomey's bill creates a defensive national registry to deter the sale of weapons to terrorists, criminals, and the mentally disabled. The law does not establish a pro-active national registry of gun owners--as some on the right have argued," said Ms. Adams.
"Because reasonable conservatives can differ on the Toomey/Manchin bill, our group will remain neutral on its status.
"However, we will not allow attacks by some national conservative leaders and organizations, on Pennsylvania's great Senator, Pat Toomey, to go unanswered.
"Senator Toomey, in just a few short years in the US Senate, has developed such an amazing record that we believe he is one of the best US Senators to ever represent the Keystone state.
"In his freshman year, alone, the Senator authored a federal budget that would have, if adopted, lowered tax rates and led to a balanced budget within ten years.
"The Senator has been an unceasing friend of veterans, servicemen/women, and their families. He has held firm on the sequester and advocated term limits.
"We stand firmly behind Senator Toomey and his leadership--even, when, on that rare occasion, we disagree with him," said Ms. Adams.
(In January, the Association opposed Senator Toomey's "Fiscal Cliff' vote.)
